Onion chutney has complex flavors – the slight tartness of the tamarind, the smokiness of the red chilies, the slight pungent flavor of garlic, the sweetness of the onions and the earthy flavor of the lentils. Since it has so many flavors combined in one, it goes very well with tiffin snacks like rava idli or masala dosa or uttapam.

Ingredients

10 minutes
2-3 servings
  • 1big onion
  • 2tomatoes
  • 4-6 podsgarlic
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp urad dhuli dal
  • 1 tbsp chana dhuli dal
  • 1/2 tspmustard seeds
  • 1/8 tspasafoetida
  • 2Dry red chilli (whole)
  • 2 tbsp water if needed
  • To tastesalt
  • 1/2 tspred chilli powder (degi mirch)
  • 2 tbsp Tamarind pulp

Steps

  1. 1

    Heat oil in a wok. Add mustard seeds and when mustard seeds splutter add asafoetida and saute for 1 minute. Now add urad and chana dal and roast for 2 minutes. Add whole red chilli and sauté for 1 minute.

    Peel, wash and Chop onion, garlic and tomato.

    Add onion and saute for 2 minutes. Then add chopped tomatoes and garlic and saute for 1 minute again. Switch off the flame. Let the mixture cool.

    Now put it in the mixer. Add tamarind pulp and salt and grind to a fine paste. Add red chilli powder and churn again for 1 minute. Transfer it in a bowl.
