Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes 🌱

Ever since I watched the film Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe I’ve wanted to make these! Traditionally I gather they are fried in bacon fat and coated in egg and corn. However I’ve made an egg free version that just happens to be #vegan too.

Ever since I watched the film Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe I’ve wanted to make these! Traditionally I gather they are fried in bacon fat and coated in egg and corn. However I’ve made an egg free version that just happens to be #vegan too.
Steps
- 1
Wash and slice the green tomatoes. You want them to be about 1 cm thick (not too thick not too thin)!
- 2
Add all of the dry dredge ingredients to a bowl and mix. Then add the almond milk to a large flat bowl and whisk the dry ingredients in.
- 3
In another large flat bowl put your corn meal.
- 4
Put the slices into the corn flour wet dredge and coat well on both sides. Then dip the slice into the cornmeal and coat both sides. Put the coated slice on a clean plate.
- 5
Repeat step 4 for all of your tomato slices.
- 6
Heat a hearty glug of olive oil in a frying pan. Pan fry the slices until golden and crispy on each side. Drain on a piece of kitchen towel before serving.
- 7
I served mine with chilli mayo 😋
