Puli Inji / Ginger Chutney

Puli inji is a type of chutney or pickle prepared using fresh ginger, green chillies, tamarind and jaggery. It is a sweet, sour and spicy chutney which is an important part of Onam sadhya. This chutney tastes absolutely delicious!

Puli inji is a type of chutney or pickle prepared using fresh ginger, green chillies, tamarind and jaggery. It is a sweet, sour and spicy chutney which is an important part of Onam sadhya. This chutney tastes absolutely delicious!
Cooking Instructions

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When it crackles, add hing, curry leaves, broken dry chili pieces, ginger, and green chilies. Cook it until ginger is golden in colour.

Add tamarind pulp, jaggery, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt along with water in a pan and put it on the stove. Start cooking it on medium heat.

When jaggery melts, add the ginger mixture to the pan and keep on cooking on medium heat stirring in between. Cook it until thick and the texture is like a chutney. Let it cool down before storing it in an air-tight container.

Puli inji can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks. It tastes delicious as a side dish with your main meal. It is an important part of Onam sadhya.
