This spice mix is also called Gun powder or Mulaga podi. It is used to sprinkle on/served with idli, dhosa and such South Indian dishes.
I tried one or two recipes earlier, but I didn't find anything special about it and lost interest in this spice mix forever. But this time when I tried again with this recipe, it turns Ed out to be an ultimate recipe, a taste enhancer in its real sense.

Take the deals along with ½ tsp oil in a pan. Roast the Dal on the lowest flame while continuously stirring, till it starts to get pinkish. Add sesame seeds at this point. Stir for another minute. The deals must look beautifully pink/golden brown. Take it out in a plate and leave it to cool.

Add chillies and curry leaves in the same pan. Roast on the lowest while stirring till the chillies are warm to hot. Add tamerind. You may also add the asafoetida IF USING THE PIECES, not the powder. Powder to be added before grinding.

In a mixer jar add the chilli mix first and grind till fine. Add the Dal mixture and grind again. Keep it will remain slightly crumbly like coarse Sooji. Enjoy this flavourful spice mix with idli, uttapam, dhosa etc. The attached combo tastes yummm with this masala.
