Pan-Fried Bao Zi

Now, making baozi has become a special tradition in our home, just like it was for my grandparents. It takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun! I love that my daughter is just as excited about baozi as I was growing up.

Now, making baozi has become a special tradition in our home, just like it was for my grandparents. It takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun! I love that my daughter is just as excited about baozi as I was growing up.
Steps
- 1
Make the Dough:
In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, yeast, and warm water.
Knead into a smooth dough, then cover it and let it rise until it doubles in size (about 1 hour). - 2
Prepare the Filling:
In a food processor, combine ground beef, onion, scallions, salt, pepper, five-spice powder, soy sauces, oyster sauce, and sesame oil.
Blend until well mixed and set aside. - 3
Shape the Dough:
After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles. Roll it out into a log and cut it into 21 pieces (around 35 g each).
Roll each piece into a thick wrapper, leaving a slight bump in the middle.
- 4
Fill and Seal:
Add a spoonful of the filling to the center of each wrapper. Pinch the edges together to seal, forming the bao zi.
- 5
Rest the Bao Zi
Let the filled bao zi rest for about 15 minutes before cooking.
- 6
Fry the Bao Zi:
Heat some oil in a cast-iron pan over medium heat. Place the bao zi in the pan, flat side down, and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden brown on the bottom.
- 7
Simmer:
Pour the flour and water mixture around the bao zi (not directly on top), cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.
- 8
Crisp the Bottom:
Drizzle a bit more oil around the bao zi and cook until the bottom is thick and golden brown.
- 9
Garnish and Serve:
Sprinkle black sesame seeds and chopped scallions over the fried bao zi before serving. Enjoy!
