A spicy, tangy dish that can be mixed with rice or served as a side-dish with a bland kootu or curd rice.

Wash the ridgegourd and take the peels. Use the peeled ridgegourd for some other dish

Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes

Heat oil in a pan

Fry urad dal and red chillies until the urad dal turns light brown
- 5
Add the ridgegourd peels and saute till it turns soft
- 6
Add soaked tamarind, asafoetida and salt. Mix well for a minute

Let the mixture cool

Grind it into a coarse paste in a mixer with very little water.

Serve it along with kootu or curd rice
