Sweet Chili

I've never been a fan of spicy food but had been told by many that making chili was an inexpensive and easy meal to prepare for a medium to large size family. I started off making a spicy version but barely ate any myself. In order to eat with my family I'd separate my portion before adding spice but the result was bland. Instead, I tried adding things to dull the spiciness. It was better, but still not great. When my kids were young they were wary of the spicy kind too and I'd separate theirs as well. I realized there were more that preferred sweet to spicy, so I decided to cook it how i liked it and let those who liked spicy be the ones to add stuff. It took years to settle on this recipe but I found that even people who like a hot chili enjoyed my sweet version for a change of pace..Its great for functions, and other parents especially, always ask me for the recipe. These days, my sweet chili is known well enough within my circle that people request it.

Ingredients

  1. main ingredients
  2. 1 canmaple flavor baked beans
  3. 1 canmild chili beans
  4. 1 cankidney beans
  5. 1 canlima beans
  6. 1 canblack beans
  7. 1 canbutter beans
  8. 1 canpinto beans
  9. 1 cantomato paste
  10. 1 largeor 2 small cans of stewed tomatos
  11. 8sweet peppers (approximately) (use a variety of red, orange and yellow for color)
  12. 2 lbground beef
  13. 1sweet vidalia onion
  14. spices
  15. 1/2 cupbrown sugar
  16. 1 tbspground cinnamon
  17. 1 tbspsalt
  18. 1 tspblack pepper
  19. 1 tspgarlic powder
  20. 1 tspchili powder
  21. dashof any other spices like cilantro, paprika, etc.
  22. utencils
  23. 8 quartcrock pot
  24. 1can opener
  25. 1 largefrying pan
  26. 1spatula
  27. 1 largeserving spoon
  28. 1cutting board
  29. 1sharp knife for dicing
  30. optional toppings
  31. 1 boxcrackers
  32. 1 packagesshredded mexican blend cheese

Steps

  1. 1

    Brown ground beef

  2. 2

    Open all cans and pour or scoop entire contents into crock pot including any juices

  3. 3

    Drain grease from ground beef and add ground beef to crock pot

  4. 4

    Dice peppers and onion and add to crock pot. If you prefer the peppers and onion to be crunchy cut into larger pieces and wait until last 2 hours before adding to crock pot.

    Stir ingredients thoroughly then add all spices

  6. 6

    Return lid to crock pot and cook a minimum of 3 hours on highest setting. If you choose to start it in the morning and will be away from the crock pot for more than 6 hours, put the crock pot on medium setting and let cook for 6-8 hours before serving.

    Serve chili and add crackers and cheese if desired.
