Ingredients

  1. 1 packagekunafa pastry
  2. 1.1 lbs (500 grams)Akkawi cheese, soaked to remove salt
  3. 1 stickunsalted butter, melted
  4. 1 teaspoonkunafa coloring
  5. 1 cupcold simple syrup, for soaking
  6. Pistachios, for garnish

Steps

  1. 1

    Pulse the kunafa pastry in a food processor until it’s slightly coarse. Place it in a large bowl, add the melted butter, and rub together well to evenly coat the pastry.

  2. 2

    Add the kunafa coloring, mix well, then spread the mixture in a buttered baking pan. Press down firmly to compact the pastry.

  3. 3

    Crumble the cheese and spread it evenly over the kunafa, leaving a border around the edges. Bake in a preheated oven at medium heat until the cheese is fully melted and the kunafa is set.

  4. 4

    Remove from the oven, invert onto a larger tray, and pour the cold simple syrup over the top. Garnish with pistachios and serve.
