Fried Bee Hoon

The Chinese in my country calls it economical bee hoon. My culture calls it birthday bee hoon.. 😆 Simply because this dish is commonly found in almost all birthday celebrations.

But this is slightly different from economical recipe. Economical's main ingredients are just garlic, soy sauces and water. This is more of the 'hardworking' version.. because it involves blending of onion and garlic. 🤪

Usual fried bee hoon outside, if you noticed, are mostly whitish in colour. Why mine brownish? Because i added oyster sauce. You may choose to omit that if you're allergic to seafood or simply dont have any oyster sauce at home.

Mine only has carrot because my now-fussy-eater 3yo only eats carrots. Boo hooo.. and i wasnt too keen to remove other vegetables for her. So just carrot it is! 🤣
Again, feel free to add your own variety of greens.

Ingredients

  1. To blend
  2. 1big onion
  3. 3garlic
  4. Other ingredients
  5. 1 packetbee hoon, soaked in hot water for 30mins
  6. 3 piecesfish cakes, sliced
  7. 2carrot, sliced (i grated mine using potato peeler 🤪)
  8. 1 tbspnoyster sauce
  9. 2tspn white pepper powder
  10. Water
  11. Salt
  12. Oil for frying

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Heat up oil in big wok. Once oil is hot, pour in blended ingredients and fry till fragrant.

  2. 2

Reduce heat to low medium. Add in carrots and fry for a while.

  3. 3

Add in sliced fish cakes and fry for a while. Add a bit of water if too dry.

  4. 4

Add in oyster sauce, pepper and salt to taste. Adjust taste accordingly. If you like more peppery, add more pepper. If you like it more salty, add more salt. Hurhurr.. but to me, let it be slightly more salty than your usual salt level because once you add the noodles, it will be just nice. If you add just enough salt at this point, your noodle will be slightly bland at the end of cooking. Trial and error here okay..? ✌

  5. 5

Once you've gotten the right taste of seasonings, in goes the noodles. Pour in ½ cup of water as well. The water will further cook the noodles. At this point, use a tong to mix and loosen the noodles. If the noodles are still hard, add more water.. ¼ cup each time and cover lid to further cook the noodle.

  6. 6

The noodles should not break apart. If it's breaking apart and soggy, you may have put in too much water and/or you may have mix the noodles too much/hard. That's why i recommend using a big tong instead.

  7. 7

Once you're happy with the taste and texture, turn off heat and serve with pickled green chillies. This goes well with fried chicken wings. 😋

  8. 8

Note: this may look like an easy dish. But trust me... it took me several tries before i finally mastered this. To be honest, i can cook assam pedas better than this. 🤣 So... dont give up if you didnt get this dish right first time.. 😘

Cooking is about love and following your tastebuds.Even if you don't follow the 'rule' of cooking or uses 'instant' ingredients, as long as your kids and spouse love it, you've nailed cooking.Do not be upset if your cooking didn't turn out the first time, as per the recipe. Try again, cook with your heart, and eventually you can succeed.Using instant ingredients also requires skills to make it delicious and finger licking. It definitely saves precious time. At least the dish is home-cooked, instead of store bought. 😅Home-cooked with love dishes taste wayyy much yummier than store bought. 😋
