How to Boil Fava Beans or Broad Beans

I had a large amount of fava beans. I was searching for a good way to cook them, and came across a recipe from a TV cooking show called Hanamaru Market.

I added the sake to take away the green-raw flavor. It's possible that cooking the beans for two minutes might just be a little too much. They'll still continue to cook because of the residual heat, so you might not even need to boil them for the full two minutes. Recipe by Kyouchan

Ingredients

  1. 1as many as you have Fava beans (broad beans)
  2. 2 tbspper liter of water Salt
  3. 100 mlper liter of water Sake
  4. 1000 mlWater

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Take the beans out of the pods. Despite how they look, they are pretty small when removed. Cut the black fibers off from the top.

  2. 2

Bring the water to a boil (this time I used a large amount of beans so I used 2 liters of water). Next, add the salt and sake. Cook the beans for only 2 minutes!

  3. 3

Drain the beans in a sieve or colander and let them cool. Do not put them in cold water. This will make them mushy. Use a fan to cool them.

  4. 4

Once they have cooled enough so that you can touch them, peel the skin from the beans. They break easily, so be very gentle.

  5. 5

That's all you need to do! Of course you can eat them as is, and they'll be delicious. You can have a handful before a meal, but try not to eat them all!
