Today I have made chanadal in Bengali style, they called it Cholar dal. Cholar dal is flavoured with ghee, coconut and whole spices. Except routine meal, Cholar dal is served and offered in Durga Puja Bhog too.

Ingredients

2 hours
2 persons
  • 1 cupsplit Bengal gram
  • 1/4 tspturmeric powder
  • 2 tbspghee
  • 1 tspsugar
  • 1 tspcumin seeds
  • 2dry red chilies
  • 1bay leaf
  • 2green cardamoms
  • 3cloves
  • 2-3small stick cinnamon
  • 8-10kismis
  • 8-10coconut slices
  • 2-3green chillies
  • 1 tbspginger (finely chopped/ grated)
  • Pinchasafoetida
  • to tasteSalt

Steps

    Wash & soak dal for one hour.

  2. 2

    Then add salt, turmeric powder, and more water. Approximately ratio 1:3 i.e. one cup dal, 3 cup water.

    Pressure cook until the dal is cooked, take care that it should not over cook to mushy.

  4. 4

    Now in a pan, heat ghee and fry coconut slices till it become light brown. Remove them. In same pan prepare tempering. Add cumin seeds & asafoetida. Once cumin seeds splutters, add all whole spices, saute gor while then add green chillies & ginger and cook for a while.

    Now add this tempering to the cooked dal, add sugar, kismis & fried coconut slices.

    Cook for 5-7 minutes on a slow flame so all the flavours & aroma of tempering infused in dal.

    Serve hot with luchi, paratha, or steamed rice.
