Ingredients

  • 1/2 cuptuvar dal
  • 1.5 cupswater for pressure cooking
  • 1/3 cupfinely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cupfinely chopped tomatoes
  • 2finely chopped green chillies
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1.5 tspginger garlic paste
  • 3/4 tsprai / mustard seeds
  • 1 tspJeera / cumin
  • 1 pinchhing / asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsphaldi / turmeric powder
  • to tasteSalt
  • 1/4 tspred chilli powder
  • 1 tspkasuri methi
  • 1/4 tspgaram masala powder
  • 2 tbspchopped coriander
  • 2-3 tbspghee

Steps

  1. 1

    Add tuvar daal, pinch of turmeric and water in a pressure cooker. Let it cook for 8 to 9 whistles. Once the daal is cooked mash slightly and keep aside.

    In a pan heat ghee, add rai and let it splutter. Then add jeera and fry. Add onions and fry till light brown. Add ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute. Add green chillies and kadi patta. Stir.

    Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, hing and fry for a few seconds. Add tomatoes and cook till soft. Add the daal and stir well. Add enough water for the dal consistency you like and then add salt.. stir and simmer for 4 to 5 mins.

    Crush kasuri methi and add to the dal. Add garam masala and simmer for a minute. Garnish with coriander leaves.
