Naan bread

We decided to cook a family curry on Friday night as felt we deserved a treat at the end of week 2 of lockdown. So, obviously the family really wanted naan bread to go with our sumptuous butter chicken. Hence this recipe! It was so lovely - we made 2 large ones and they all went within minutes! It is a slightly more time consuming recipe compared with some of the more basic recipes out there (which are also great) but, as we have time for dough proving at the moment, we thought we'd go all out!

Steps

1.5 hours proving and 10 minutes cooking
  1. 1

Mix water, yeast and sugar together on a bowl and stand in a warm place for 10 minutes

  2. 2

Sift flour and salt into a large bowl. Add yoghurt, yeast mixture and butter (ghee)

  3. 3

Mix well together until it forms a dough

  4. 4

Remove from bowl and knead on a floured board for approx. 5 minutes. The dough should be smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

Put the dough in a bowl and cover. Stand in a warm place for about 90 minutes or until it is doubled in size.

  6. 6

Punch down the dough and knead again for 5 minutes. Divide into 2 large or 4 small pieces.

  7. 7

Roll each piece into a naan shape.

  8. 8

Heat the grill to a medium/hot setting. Line a grill pan with foil and lightly grease. Place the naan on the grill pan and cook under the hot grill until it is puffs up and becomes browned. Turn over and repeat on the other side. This should take approx 5 minutes per side but could be less depending on the grill heat so keep a close eye on it.

  9. 9

    Serve with your favourite curry!!
