Grease 13x9 inch baking dish.

Arrange bread in a single layer, tearing as needed to fit.

Combine eggs with sugar, milk, salt and vanilla. Pour over the bread.

Cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight.

To bake, dot with butter; sprinkle with cinnamon and nuts, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes, until puffy and lightly browned and knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Serve with syrup and additional butter.
