Soak tamarind for 30 mins in warm water 💦, keep aside. Wash Nile perch pieces🐠, keep aside, if using mackerels, 🐟and clean the mackerels, remove guts & grills, cut into pieces, wash well, pat dry both (Nile perch/ mackerels) on kitchen towel and keep aside, marinade Nile perch/ mackerels pieces with little salt and black pepper powder.

In a grinder add finely chopped onions 🧅, green chillies roughly chopped, ginger roughly chopped,garlic roughly chopped 🧄, grind into semi texture (not into paste), keep aside. Heat oil, add fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, cumin seeds when mustard seeds start to crackle, add fresh curry leaves 🌱 allow them to sizzle for a few mins.

Add onions & ginger- garlic mixture 🧅🧄, cook until the oil comes out, add tomato puree 🍅 mix well, add dry spices: kashmiri red chillies powder 🌶️, coriander & cumin powder, turmeric powder and mix well, cook on low medium, until oil comes out, add coconut milk 🥥🥛and cook for 2 mins, add 1 cup water 💦, cover and cook for 10 min and add salt 🧂 mix well.

Uncovered the lid and add tamarind pulp and mix well, add Nile perch pieces 🐠/ mackerels pieces 🐟cook for 5 mins, don't use the spoon, after adding the fish pieces 🐠🐟in the gravy, check fish pieces with a knife if tender, remove from the heat and wait for 5 mins, pour in serving dish and serve h with hot plain rice 🍚.

Note: I have used Nile perch in my recipe, but if desired you can use mackerels, sardines. Substitute coconut milk 🥥🥛 with coconut cream🥥 or water💦
