Easier Than Tonkatsu: Juicy Tonteki

Thank you for making this recipe popular! The rich sauce makes it perfect with rice, cabbage, or even a drink!
The origin of this recipe
I switched from making tonkatsu to tonteki midway, and it turned out delicious. It's healthier than frying, and the sweet sauce was a big hit with the kids.
The meat in the photo uses Costco's 'pork loin ribs'. It stayed tender and tasty even after cooking.

Serves 2 servings
  1. 2-4thick-cut pork loin chops
  2. as neededAll-purpose flour,
  3. as neededSalt and pepper,
  4. 1/2onion
  5. [Sauce] (Mix all ★ ingredients together)
  6. 1 tablespoon★soy sauce
  7. 1 tablespoon★sake
  8. 1 tablespoon★mirin
  9. 1/2 tablespoon★ketchup
  10. 1/2 tablespoon★oyster sauce
  11. 1/2 tablespoon★honey (or sugar)
  12. 1 clove★grated garlic
  13. Side dish
  14. Shredded cabbage or other vegetables of your choice

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Cut the pork into easy-to-eat pieces, season with salt and pepper, and coat with flour. If using tonkatsu meat, make cuts in the muscle to prevent curling.

  2. 2

Cut the onion into wedges about 1/4 inch thick and microwave in a microwave-safe dish for about 2 minutes. (You can also sauté it, but microwaving saves time.)

  3. 3

Add a generous amount of oil (not listed in ingredients) to a frying pan and cook the pork. Once browned, flip it over, cover, and cook through.

  4. 4

Once cooked, add the onion and pour the sauce over the top. Stir to coat everything, and once the sauce thickens, it's ready.

  5. 5

Serve with shredded cabbage or other vegetables. (The tonteki sauce goes great with shredded cabbage!)
