Kohlrabi comes inm different colors, white, green, purple and etc. purple kohlrabi is high in anthocyanins, which may help lower blood pressure and your risk of stroke Kohlrabi contains powerful plant compounds called glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which are mainly found in cruciferous vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 2 cKohlrabi, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 Cuptoor dal
  • 2 tbspsesame seed oil
  • 1 tspfennel seeds
  • 1 tspmustard seeds
  • 1/2 tspmethi seeds
  • 1/2 tsphing, asafetida
  • 2Green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 tspturmeric powder
  • 1curry leaves
  • 1 cuponion, finely chopped
  • 5Garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 cupstomato slices/12 cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoonsambar powder
  • 1 tablespoontamarind paste
  • 1 tbspsambar powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Paste:
  • 1 tablespoonCoriander seeds
  • 1 tablespoonBengal Gram. split
  • 1 tablespoonUrad, skinned
  • 3Green chilies
  • 2 inchesGinger, finely chopped
  • 1 cupCoconut pieces
  • 1 tablespoonCoriander seeds

    Peel kohlrabi; cut the flesh into small cubes.
    Cook the toor in a bowl with 3c water in a pressure cooker. Keep the cooked lentils aside for later use.
    When The lentils are cooking, attend to the rest of the chores.

    To make the paste:
    Fry the paste ingredients except coconut in 1 tbsp hot oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Turn off the stove when aromatic. soak the fried ingredients in water., 15 minutes, blend the soaked ingredients along with coconut in a mixie to make a smooth paste

    In a heavy saucepan over medium heat add the oil. Add the mustard seeds, let it splutter, stir in Fennel, hing, methi and red chilies. Sauté Onions, garlic, green chilies, and curry leaves. Add turmeric When onion turns slightly brown add chopped kohlrabi. Saute for a few minutes-4-6 minutes. Add the chopped tomatoes, stir; cook for 3-4 mins. Let the tomatoes get soft. Add 3 cups water, bring it to boil.

    Reduce heat slightly after boiling. Add the cooked toor and stir well. Add 3 cups water and sambar masala powder and stir. Dilute tamarind paste in 1 cup water, add to the rest, stir and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the paste. After a couple of minutes turn off the stove.
    Add salt to taste. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves

    Transfer to a serving bowl. You may serve the sambar with rice, pongal, dosa, idli etc
