Tomato pappu also known as Aandhra pappu or tomato dal, is a basic lentils dish from Aandhra cuisine. An Aandhra meal is uncomplicate without a lentil dish. An easy and flavourful dal made with ripe tomatoes and pigeon pea lentils. It is mainly served with hot and steamed rice with pickles or stir-fried vegetables.   1. 100 gmToor dal
  2. 2medium Tomato
  3. 1small Onion
  4. 2Green chili
  5. 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  6. 1 tspRed chili powder
  7. 1 tspSalt
  8. 1 tbspTamarind pulp
  9. 1 tbspGhee or oil
  10. 1/2 tspMustard seeds
  11. 1/2 tspCumin seeds
  12. 1Dry red chili
  13. 6Curry leaves
  14. 1 pinchAsafoetida
  15. 5 clovesGarlic
  16. 1small Onion slices

Steps

    Wash toor dal and add to a pressure cooker with chopped tomato, onion, green chili.

    Turmeric, red chili powder and add enough water to cover and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.

    When the air comes out of the cooker, open the lid of the cooker, mash it with a pestle, add salt and tamarind pulp and let it cook on low heat.

    Heat ghee or oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin, dry red chili, curry leaves, asafoetida, garlic, and onion slices.

    Sauté until onions are golden and pour tempering over the cooked dal. Mix well and simmer for 2 minutes before serving. Take out in a serving bowl and serve.
