Crumbly Cake

Emilija Milosevic
Emilija Milosevic @emilijamilosevic

This is a very old Serbian cake that has been made for generations in many families. It is a traditional homemade dessert that grandmothers and great-grandmothers used to prepare, and the recipe has been passed down from one generation to another. The cake is simple, but very loved because of its soft dough, sweet filling, and the characteristic grated layer on top that gives it its “shaggy” look.

Steps

  1. 1

Beat together 1 margarine, 5 egg yolks, 4 tablespoons of sugar, baking powder, and 400 g of flour until a dough forms. Divide the dough into two parts. Put one half in the freezer to chill, and roll out the other half in a baking tray.

  2. 2

In another bowl, beat the 5 egg whites with 250 g of sugar until stiff. Then mix in 4 tablespoons of plum jam and 200 g of coarsely chopped ground walnuts.

  3. 3

Spread this mixture over the rolled-out dough in the tray. Take the chilled dough from the freezer and grate it over the top.
Cut the cake into squares and bake.
When the cake is baked, sprinkle it with powdered sugar.
