Peel and core the apples, then grate them using the large holes of a box grater.

After grating, add the sugar and cinnamon to the apples and mix well.

Continue with the dough. In a mixer, beat the melted butter with the sugar, then add the egg yolk, baking powder, vanilla, and gradually the flour. Mix until a soft, crumbly dough forms.

Butter a round or ceramic baking dish. Press half the dough into the bottom and up the sides like a tart crust. Add the apple filling, then crumble the remaining dough over the top.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) with fan for about 30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and, once slightly cooled, dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

I find it very sweet, so you can leave out the sugar from the filling if you prefer.

Enjoy it with hot tea or French press coffee.

A small variation for chocolate-caramel lovers: Use only the dough and press it into a 9x9 inch (22x22 cm) baking dish. Bake without filling. Replace the filling with 1 can caramelized sweetened condensed milk, 9 ounces (250 grams) dark chocolate, 2/3 cup (150 ml) heavy cream, and 1/3 cup (100 ml) milk.

Spread the caramel over the baked crust. Heat the milk and cream well, add the chocolate to melt, then pour over the caramel. Once cooled, refrigerate.
