Steps
- 1
To make the starter, add 1 tablespoon flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, the yeast, and 4 tablespoons milk to a cup. Cover and let rise for a bit.
- 2
Make a well in the flour, then add the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, margarine, starter, and warm milk to the center.
- 3
Mix until a dough forms. Knead until smooth, then let rest and rise for 10 to 15 minutes.
- 4
Once risen, knead again to remove air bubbles. Roll out the dough and cut into rectangles or triangles to make medialunas or other shapes for assorted facturas as you like.
- 5
Place on a baking sheet. Add quince paste, sweet potato paste, or other fillings. Brush generously with egg for color, let rise for about 15 minutes, then bake at the highest oven temperature for 10 to 20 minutes.
- 6
After baking, brush with syrup (boil 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar). Let cool and decorate with chocolate, shredded coconut, or powdered sugar.
