Beef and Tofu Sukiyaki-Style with Napa Cabbage and Scallions
First, season the beef, then simmer it with napa cabbage, grilled tofu, and scallions, letting the vegetables release their moisture. Grilled tofu holds its shape well, making this dish easy to prepare.
Recipe background:
I’ve made sukiyaki-style simmered dishes with various cuts of pork before, but this time I tried making it with beef.
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Cut the grilled tofu into bite-sized pieces.
- 2
Slice the scallion diagonally.
- 3
Cut the napa cabbage into slices about 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide.
- 4
In a large skillet, add the beef (cut into bite-sized pieces) and the sukiyaki sauce ingredients. Mix well, then heat over medium.
- 5
Stir while cooking to let the beef cook through and absorb the flavors.
- 6
Turn off the heat and move the beef to the side of the skillet.
- 7
Add the grilled tofu from step 1 to the skillet...
- 8
...then add the scallion from step 2...
- 9
...then add the napa cabbage from step 3...
- 10
...cover and simmer over medium heat for a while.
- 11
When the napa cabbage has softened and reduced in volume, place the beef on top of the cabbage so the cabbage is submerged in the sukiyaki sauce.
- 12
Cover again and, from time to time, uncover and spoon the sukiyaki sauce over the grilled tofu as it simmers.
- 13
When everything is well flavored, turn off the heat.
- 14
If you simmer until most of the liquid is gone, the flavor will become stronger. Taste as you go and simmer to your preferred flavor.
- 15
If the flavor becomes too strong, add a little water.
- 16
If you use more vegetables, more liquid will be released, so adjust the amount of sukiyaki sauce as needed for taste.

I had about 200 g of sukiyaki beef, but it was too little to go through the effort of making sukiyaki, so I made a variation of it in a frying pan. It's an easy way to prepare a sukiyaki-like meal.Adding the beef in two processes helps to keep it from getting too tough. You can use leek stalks in place of onions. I wanted to make a beef bowl, the same way I made sukiyaki.Since this recipe uses a lot of onions you may want to add more soy sauce. This is my mom's way of making sukiyaki. The rainy season has just begun and so now I've begun making hot pots. Most of the time the description has one cooking them on a portable stove but here I just keep it simple. You can put in a lot of other ingredients in addition the mushrooms that I've used, e.g. napa cabbage, carrots, tofu, shirataki noodles, konnyaku cakes, negi, etc. I only had the mushrooms left over from the last hot pot. 🇯🇵🫕🐮🥩🍄 蛟龍Stormwyrm -

An Economical Dish: Pork, Bean Sprouts, and Tofu Sukiyaki-don Rice Bowl An Economical Dish: Pork, Bean Sprouts, and Tofu Sukiyaki-don Rice Bowl
You might question using bean sprouts with sukiyaki flavors, but they really absorb those flavors well and become really tasty. This is a favorite in our family. It's kind to your wallet too, so it's your friend when your household budget is tight. It's a very easy and quick recipe. The tofu absorbs the flavors faster if you crumble it up with your hands, and you don't have to cut it either so I recommend it.The flavoring is rather sweet, so please adjust to your taste. Beef Rice Bowl Made of Thinly Sliced Sukiyaki Meat Beef Rice Bowl Made of Thinly Sliced Sukiyaki Meat
I had leftover sukiyaki beef, so I simmered it to make a beef rice bowl. You can use shredded meat as long as it's beef. If you simmer the meat for too long, it'll become hard, so make sure that you cook it until it's just cooked through, then let it absorb the flavour in residual heat. When the taste is too strong, adjust with water. Recipe by Ni-na cookpad.japan
