When I am at a cookout, I sometimes find myself with a plate of potato chips and carrot sticks. This bothers me for a couple of reasons, 1) I am hungry and 2) people think that being plant-strong is no fun. Now I can bring these veggie burgers to the party, and be super happy! Note: bring extras because the omnivores will want them too!

Ingredients

30 mins
6 servings
  • Two 15 oz.cans beans (kidney beans work well, but try others too)
  • 1 cuprolled oats (uncooked)
  • 1 cupcooked brown rice
  • ¼ cupliquid (ketchup, spicy salsa, bbq sauce, pasta sauce, go crazy)
  • ½ tspgarlic powder
  • ½ tsponion powder
  • ½ -1 tspspices (taco seasoning, Italian seasoning, curry, go crazy again!)
  • ½ tspsmoked paprika OR ¼ t liquid smoke (optional, gives smoky flavor)
  • ½ cupcorn (optional but give it a nice chew)

Steps

  1. 1

    Drain and rinse the beans. Mash with a potato masher or your hands until no whole beans left but still chunky. Add the rest of the ingredients, mash again until blended.

  2. 2

    Form into patties and put in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to firm up.

  3. 3

    They can be baked, pan seared, or grilled about 10 minutes on a side. Turn gently but they will hold together. You can baste with some bbq sauce for more flavor.
