Ingredients

  1. 1egg yolk
  2. 1 cup(about 250 grams) unsalted butter, melted
  3. 1small water glass (about 3/4 cup or 150 grams) sugar
  4. 1 packetbaking powder
  5. 1 packetvanilla sugar or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. 4 1/2small water glasses (about 3 1/2 cups or 500 grams) all-purpose flour, or as needed (add enough so the dough doesn't stick and can be crumbled, but don't make it too stiff)
  7. For the filling
  8. 3 1/3 pounds(about 1.5 kg) red apples
  9. 1/4 cup(about 50 grams) sugar
  10. 1 1/2 teaspoonscinnamon

    Peel and core the apples, then grate them using the large holes of a box grater.

    After grating, add the sugar and cinnamon to the apples and mix well.

  3. 3

    Continue with the dough. In a mixer, beat the melted butter with the sugar, then add the egg yolk, baking powder, vanilla, and gradually the flour. Mix until a soft, crumbly dough forms.

    Butter a round or ceramic baking dish. Press half the dough into the bottom and up the sides like a tart crust. Add the apple filling, then crumble the remaining dough over the top.

    Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) with fan for about 30 minutes.

    Remove from the oven and, once slightly cooled, dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

    I find it very sweet, so you can leave out the sugar from the filling if you prefer.

    Enjoy it with hot tea or French press coffee.

    A small variation for chocolate-caramel lovers: Use only the dough and press it into a 9x9 inch (22x22 cm) baking dish. Bake without filling. Replace the filling with 1 can caramelized sweetened condensed milk, 9 ounces (250 grams) dark chocolate, 2/3 cup (150 ml) heavy cream, and 1/3 cup (100 ml) milk.

    Spread the caramel over the baked crust. Heat the milk and cream well, add the chocolate to melt, then pour over the caramel. Once cooled, refrigerate.
