Ingredients

1 hour 30 mins
8 servings
  • 13-6 lb whole chicken
  • 2 quartwater
  • 2 tspsalt
  • 1 tspcourse black pepper
  • 2 cupall-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tspbaking powder
  • 1/2 tspsalt
  • 3 tbspshortening
  • 3/4 cupbuttermilk

Steps

1 hour 30 mins
  1. 1

    Add water and 2 tsp salt to dutch oven and bring to a boil

  2. 2

    Add whole chicken and boil at medium heat for one hour

  3. 3

    Take chicken out of dutch oven to cool then debone (should be falling off the bone)

  4. 4

    Mix flour, baking soda, 1\2 tsp salt, shortening, and buttermilk. Knead 4 times

  5. 5

    Roll out dough 1\4 inch thick and cut into squares (or pinch off pieces the size of quarters)

  6. 6

    Add dumplings one at a time to remaining boiling water one at a time and simmer for 15 minutes

  7. 7

    Add deboned chicken and pepper and simmer for 15 more minutes...

  8. 8
