Modak is the most popular dish of the festival Ganesh Chaturthi. Generally modak is made with rice flour and coconut stuffing. I made these modak little different from the traditional one, with the flavor of Puran poli which is also a very famous festive dish.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cupsplit bengal gram or chana dal
  2. 1 cuprice flour
  3. 2 tbspghee
  4. 2 tbspmilk powder
  5. 3 tbspsugar
  6. 1+1/2 cup water to cook the dough
  7. Ingredients for stuffing
  8. 1/4th cup pistachio
  9. 1/4th cup shredded coconut or fresh grated coconut
  10. 1/4th cup jaggery
  11. 1/2 tspcardamom powder

Cooking Instructions

    Soak bengal gram for 2-3 hours

    Pressure cook them with water to make them very soft.

  3. 3

    In a mixer grinder grind this cooked dal to make a smooth paste.

    You can add little water or milk to grind them nicely.

    Take out in a heavy bottomed pan.

    Add 2 tbsp of ghee and cook in low flame.

    Stir constantly otherwise the mixture will stick to the pan.

    Add 3 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of milk powder.

    Mix well and continue to cook.

    When a nice ghee roasted aroma starts emitting from the mixture, add 2 cups of hot water and whisk vigorously to mix the dal with water.

    When the mixture starts boiling add 1 cup of rice flour and whisk.

    Cover and cook in very low flame for 3-4 minutes.

    It will form a soft dough of rice and dal.
    Be careful not to form small lumps.

    Remove in a plate and let it cool for sometime.

    In the meantime with little water melt the jaggery by heating up.

    Chop pistachio with a chopper and add to the melted jaggery.

    Add shredded coconut and cardamom powder.

    Mix well to combine. Stuffing is ready now.

    Take a small lime size portion of the dough, knead a little to smooth and make a patty by pressing in between palm.

    Make a cavity by pressing with fingers and pour 1 tsp of prepared stuffing. Check the picture below.

    Now make some folds in the edge of the patty with fingers.

    Try to accumulate in the centre by pressing with your palm and fingers. (Shown in the picture below)

    As I am not good in making modak shape I took help of a spoon to make some marks in the modak.

    Like this make other modaks also.

    Heat sufficient water in a steamer.

    Arrange the modaks in the greased perforated pan of the steamer.

    Keep some gap in between the modaks.

    Cover and steam for 10 minutes. Modaks will be cooked completely.

    Take out the pan from the steamer, let it cook for 5 minutes and then transfer these modaks in a serving plate.

    Soft puran poli flavoured modaks are now ready to serve.
