Ingredients

  1. 2 cupswhole moong
  2. 3 tbspfinely chopped tomatoes
  3. 2 cupswater
  4. 1green chilli finely chopped
  5. 1 inchginger piece grated
  6. 1 tbspoil
  7. 1 tbspmustard seeds
  8. 1 tbspcumin seeds
  9. pinchasafoetida
  10. 1/2 tspturmeric powder
  11. 1/2 tspred chilli powder
  12. 1 tspcoriander powder
  13. 1 tspgaram masala
  14. 7-8curry leaves
  15. 1dried red chilli
  16. 1small bay leaf
  17. 1 tbspsugar
  18. to tastesalt
  19. 1 tbsplemon juice
  20. as requiredfresh cilantro for garnish

    Soak whole moong for 30 minutes. you can also soak them overnight. If your soaking time is longer then, then pressure cooking time will reduce.
    Drain water and take whole moong into pressure cooker. Less soaking requires more pressure cooker whistles. It may require 5-8 whistles.

    Once the pressure cooker cools down completely, open it add 2 cups of water and mash with some spatula
    Now add tomato, green chilli and ginger into it.

    Heat the oil into heavy bottom pan, meanwhile in small bowl mix turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala.In heated oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds. Let them crackle. Immediately add asafoetida, curry leaves, dried red chilli and masala powder mix. add boiled moong and let it simmer

    After 2-3 minutes add salt, sugar and lemon juice.
    Do not cover with lid, cook on medium heat for 10 minutes.

    Add some plenty of fresh cilantro and serve with roti or rice.
