Meat Wrapped Tofu

I was searching for a hearty tofu dish for my tofu-loving husband, when I ran across a recipe that used firm tofu and beef! It was just as good with pork and grilled tofu, so this is now a family favorite.

I garnished this with finely julienned cucumber, but sesame seeds, chopped green onion or snow peas and so on are OK too. Or you can just omit the garnish!
The meat just has to be thin enough to wrap around the tofu; it doesn't have to be as thinly sliced as shabu-shabu meat.
Beef is OK too of course. Adjust the size of the tofu pieces and the number of meat slices to your liking. For 4 servings. Recipe by Kawakamisan

Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1 blockGrilled tofu
  2. 1around 250 grams Pork for shabu-shabu (thinly sliced meat)
  3. 2 tbspeach Sake and water
  4. 1to 2 tablespoons Sugar
  5. 1 1/2 tbspeach Soy sauce and mirin
  6. 1 tbspCooking oil (whichever kind you like)

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Cut the grilled tofu into 16 pieces. You can use firm tofu that has been drained very well instead.

  2. 2

Wrap the tofu pieces from step 1 in the thinly cut shabu-shabu meat; spread some oil in the frying pan, put the meat-wrapped tofu seam side down in the pan, and fry over medium heat.

  3. 3

Turn the meat wrapped tofu pieces in Step 2 as you fry them; when the meat has changed color put in the sake and water, and cook for about 3 minutes.

  4. 4

Add the sugar, soy sauce and mirin to Step 3, and turn the pieces to evenly distribute the sauce. When the sauce has thickened a bit, it's done.
