Khichdi is a popular comfort food in some part of India ... Mostly eaten with desi ghee .
Steps

Firstly take a mixing bowl, add rice & dal, mix it.

Wash it & soak it in water for 30 minutes, keep aside.

Take a pressure cooker, add oil or ghee, heat it. (I have used oil).

Add hing & zeera, let it splutter.

Now add garlic grated, saute it till light brown.

Add onion & dry red chilli, stir fry it until golden brown.

Strain the khichdi, add in the masala, stir fry it for 5 minutes.

Moderate the flame,add ginger garlic paste, stir it till rawness is released.

Add haldi & red chilli powder, increase the flame,,stir fry it for 7 minutes.

Add garam masala powder now, stir fry it till grains aur separated.

Now add 2 1/2 cup water. Add salt & sugar. This is not a mushy khichdi.

Place the lid, give 4 whistles at high flame, lower the flame, cook it for 5 minutes.

Switch off the flame, allow it to depressurize. Open the lid after 5 minutes.

Take out in a serving dish, garnish it with onion browns.

Have it with desi ghee, papad, salad, dahi & achaar.

Make onion browns by frying thinly sliced onion in ghee (quantity is variable).
