Ingredients

45 mins
4-6 servings
  • 3/4 CupChana Dal
  • 1/2 CupDhuli Urad Dal
  • 2 tbspTuvar / Arhar Dal
  • 2Onions, finely chopped
  • 2Tomatoes, finely chopped or shredded in the chopper
  • 7-8Garlic Cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 inchGinger, julienned
  • 2-3Green Chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 tspCumin Seeds/ Zeera
  • 2Cloves
  • 1Black Cardamom
  • 1Bay Leaf
  • 1 tspKasuri Methi
  • 2 tspCoriander/ Dhaniya Powder
  • 1 tspCumin Powder
  • 3/4 tspGaram Masala Powder
  • 1/2 tspRed Chilli Powder
  • 1/4 tspAsafoetida Powder
  • 1/2 tspTurmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tspClarified Butter / Ghe
  • 2 tbspChopped Fresh Coriander
  • Water, as required

Steps

  1. 1

    Wash the dals well. Soak in a bowlful of water for 15-20 minutes.
    Add them to a pressure cooker with a little salt, pressure cook. Cook for 10 mins on sim after the first big whistle, take off heat.

  2. 2

    Now heat the ghee in a cooking pan, add the cumin seeds, cloves, bay leaf, black cardamom, kasuri methi and allow to crackle for a few seconds.

  3. 3

    Immediately add the asafoetida, turmeric, coriander, cumin, red chilli powders. Saute briskly for two seconds on low medium heat.

  4. 4

    Add the chopped garlic, ginger and green chillies. Saute for a few seconds until golden brown.

  5. 5

    Add the chopped onions, saute until they turn golden brown.

  6. 6

    Add the tomatoes. Saute until they turn soft and leave the sides of the pan

  7. 7

    Add salt and garam masala powder, mix & saute for a minute.

  8. 8

    Add 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves. Add this ready masala into the cooked dal in the cooker.

  9. 9

    Add water as required, again pressure cook upto 2 whistles.

  10. 10

    Take off heat. Garnish with the remaining fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with naan, roti, parantha or rice. I served it with Tikona Paranthas today! 😍
