In a pressure cooker, add urad dal, 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Give it one whistle. Drain the water and keep the dal aside in a strainer or plate.

In a kadhai, add desi ghee, asafoetida and zeera. Saute.

When the seeds start crackling, add chopped onions and garlic. Fry till it turns reddish brown.

Add chopped tomatoes and grated ginger. Add salt and saute.

When the tomatoes get almost cooked, add chopped green chilly, black pepper powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and coriander powder.

Add boiled dal and mix. Give everything a nice mix.

Garnish it with coriander leaves, pieces of kandha(onion), and pieces of tomato and add the remaining lemon juice over it.

Serve hot with chapatis or butter naan.
