Green Moong dal-Idli & Uttapam

Wash green moong dal, urad dal and rice together in enough water several times and then soak for about ½ to 1 hour.

After 1 hour drain water from it. Then grind green moong dal, urad dal, rice together in a blender or Mixer jar adding little water (as required) to make smooth consistency batter.

Remove this batter in a big bowl. Cover and let it ferment for 3-4 hours. After 3-4 hours, add salt and mix well. If the batter is too thick, add little water as needed and mix well. Make a smooth batter just like pancake batter.

Grease the idli moulds with few oil drops and pour batter. Steam for 12-14 minutes.

De-mould and serve hot with chutney.
After making 16 idlis, I made 8 medium sized uttapams of the remaining half batter. - 6
To prepare Uttapam:- Add chopped onion, chopped green chillies, grated carrot, grated beetroot, dry kasuri methi to the remaining batter and mix well.

Heat a non-stick tawa on medium heat and apply some oil with raw onion on the tawa to prevent the batter from sticking. When the tawa is hot enough, add a large spoonful of batter and spread it into a round pancake, slightly thicker than a dosa.

Drizzle some oil around the edges and on top of the uttapam. Let cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side or until the bottom is golden brown.

Then flip and cook on the other side for another 2-3 minutes. Remove the uttapam from the pan. Use raw onion to clean the tawa every time after removing uttapam. Apply a little oil to prevent the tawa from drying out.

Serve idlis and uttapam hot with your favorite chutney.

Cook Time for idlis 20-25 mins and for uttapam 35-40 mins.
Soak time -1 hour Fermentation time:-4 hours
16 idlis and 8 medium size uttapam
