Ingredients

+ - 2 1/2hrs
serves 6/8 serv
  • 1.5 kgchicken pieces cleaned(breast and thighs cut)
  • For cooking rice
  • 2 cupsrice
  • 1/2 tspturmeric powder
  • 2 tspsalt
  • 1/2 cupblack lentils
  • Water
  • Marinating chicken
  • 4 Tbsmed masala
  • 1 1/2 Tbskashmeri Masala
  • 1chopped green pepper
  • 1 tspdhanya and jeera powder
  • 2 tspgarlic and ginger
  • 1 tspbreyani powder
  • 1 Tbssalt or to your taste
  • 1/2 cupMaas (sour milk)
  • Braising the chicken
  • 1/4 cupoil
  • 1/2chopped onion
  • 1 tspjeera seeds
  • 2cinnamon sticks
  • 2bayleaf
  • 1 sprigcurry leaves
  • 1 cupfrozen mix veg
  • Handfull Chopped dhanya
  • Few leaves mint chopped
  • Layering for breyani
  • 4potatoes cut in quarters and fried
  • 1onion cut in rings fried till golden
  • Keep both aside for layering
  • 2 Tbsbutter
  • Handfull Chopped dhanya

Steps

  1. 1

    Boil rice together with the turmeric, salt, water and lentils till semi soft and strain.Keep aside.

    Marinate the chicken with all ingredients mentioned in ingredients section for marinade and leave to marinate for 1 hr

  3. 3

    In a med size pot, add the oil for braising, onions, jeera seeds, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves and fry till onions are light brown. Add the marinated chicken, curry leaves,1/2 cup water,mixed veg and cook for 30 mins on med heat.If curry is dry add little more water as there must be gravy.When chicken is cooked add a handful of chopped dhanya, few chopped mint leaves.Take off heat.

    Preheat the oven at 180°c.Add half of the rice over the curry, fried potatoes,some fried onions leaving some for the top of rice.Add the rest of the rice and lastly the rest of onions.Sprinkle some more chopped dhanya and 2 Tbs butter.Seal pot with the lid and place in the oven to steam for 45mins.Gently mix through and serve with sides of dhal and salad

Absolutely lovely and very tasty recipe I made it twice but let out the fried potato and onions but added boiled egg with tomato and onion salad.
