Of Cabbage Sodhi and Fried Fish

“I don’t know how to cook. One day if i live on my own, i ll call you everyday to help me preparing my meal. I ll be probably on your COOKPAD everyday if i want to eat our food”, said my ambitious 13 year-old daughter while eating her dinner (at 5pm) 🤦🏻♀️ “or you’ll eat out every day” my replied left her speechless for a bit. “No i won’t. Eating out in London is very expensive,” “What??!!!” I screamed in silent, a scream that only me and me alone could hear. She continued enjoying her dinner. My hands were as busy as my mind, pounding dried anchovies and onions for my ‘Malaysian Sambal’, “Notre Dame University is just 30 minutes drive from home, and so are other good universities in CBD, flight to London takes more than 17hours excluding stopover destinations, waiting duration, planning already? Leaving soon?” My mind in its erratic state spiraling and transitioning fast into unwanted mental storm; fearing the future. “I’ll be here mama. I wont leave u” my youngest one said excitedly. I smiled at her, “really? Thats great! I can even drive you to school....” “mama, you cant. I ll be in Sydney.” Sigh. Perth to Sydney, that's a long flight.
So that’s that. We left it at that. That evening, Conversation over home-cooked meals. Over Cabbage Sodhi in creamy turmeric soup and Fried Fish.
And there’s COOKPAD.

Pn-Fried and Steamed Salmon and Cabbage Pn-Fried and Steamed Salmon and Cabbage
I wanted to create a main dish with lots of cabbage.Leave the salmon for about 10 minutes after sprinkling it with salt and pepper. Pat dry and cook from the skin side first, and it won't smell fishy. If the salmon is cooked through, just let steam until the cabbage is as tender as you want it to be. For 4 servings. Cabbage with carrot and fish cake Cabbage with carrot and fish cake
This is a refined technique of Chinese "oily stir fry vegetable" which I slightly modified for modern frying pan. Why I used cabbage. It's cheap (one whole cabbage cost $2), it's resistant to overcooking (as long you keep stirring and used medium heat), it's taste sweet and delicious after properly cooked (you may not need to eat rice).
