This fragrant chutney is made with home grown apples, raisins, onion, spices and vinegar. It’s the perfect accompaniment to cheeseboards and a great alternative to apple sauce when serving roast meats. If you haven’t made chutney before, you will be pleased to know it is easier than you think and the perfect recipe to make when you have a glut of apples. Apple chutney makes a great gift!

Ingredients

2hrs
per 15g(1tbsp)
  1. 2 kg (4 1/2 lb)apples, cored and cut into 1 cm (1/2”) pieces
  2. 1 litre (34 fl oz)white vinegar
  3. 2medium onions, finely chopped or minced or grated
  4. 500 g (1 lb)brown sugar
  5. 250 g (8 oz)sultanas
  6. 250 g (8 oz)raisins
  7. Juice from 2 lemons
  8. Zest from 2 lemons
  9. 1 & 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  10. 1 & 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  11. 1 tspsalt
  12. 1/8 tspground nutmeg or cloves

Cooking Instructions

2hrs
  1. 1

Heat the vinegar gently in a large pan while stirring in the sugar.
Once the sugar has all dissolved add in the remaining ingredients. Bring slowly to the boil.

  2. 2

Simmer for at least 2 hours to thicken and darken the chutney.
Allow the chutney to cool slightly before spooning into clean, sterile jars.

  3. 3

    #Tips:

The quantities in this recipe makes about 8 lb of chutney.

By dissolving the sugar in the vinegar to begin with you avoid the possibility of burning the sugar on the bottom of the pan. When the chutney is simmering make sure you stir the pan from time to time.

  4. 4

You can eat the chutney straight away but the flavours mature if left for about 3 months before eating.
