Gujarati khatti Meethi Tuar Dal

Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1/2 cupTuar Dal (split pigeons peas)
  2. 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  3. to tasteSalt
  4. For Masala :
  5. 2-3green chillies finely chopped
  6. 1 tspgrated ginger
  7. 1 tspcoriander powder
  8. 2-3 tbspjaggery
  9. 2 tsptamarind paste
  10. For tempering :
  11. 2 tbsprefined oil
  12. 1/2 tspMustard seeds
  13. 1 tspCrushed fenugreek seeds (methi dal)
  14. 1/2 tsphing
  15. leavesCurry
  16. 2-3whole Red chilli
  17. 1 tspred chilli powder
  18. For garnishing :
  19. as neededCoriander leaves finely chopped

Cooking Instructions

    Rinse & soak tuar Dal for 1/2 an hour. Add 4 cups water, salt & turmeric powder including tuar Dal in pressure cooker. Cook it until 6-7 whistles on medium flame. Once steam released open the lid and blend dal with hand blender in a fine thick paste.

    Add Coriander powder, grated ginger, green chillies, jaggery, tamarind paste or lemon juice. Add 1/2 water if required. Bring it a boil.

    Heat oil in a fry pan Add mustard seeds, once crackled add crushed methi dal & hing, broken whole red chillies,Curry leaves. Add red chilli powder. Add this tadka in boiling dal. Stir all. Cover the lid. Simmer flame for 1-2 minutes. Switch off gas.

    Garnish with coriander leaves. Khatti Meethi Gujarati tuar dal is ready. Serve with white or brown rice as you wish.
