The Broth - Place all ingredients for Broth in a pot and leave to boil over medium heat.

The Paste - In the meantime, place all ingredients for the paste in a small bowl. Mix well. Keep aside.

Back to the broth, once boiling, remove the anchovies & the kelps. Still boiling on the stove, add the paste (chili paste/mixture). Stir well until it dissolves in the broth.

Next, add the rice cakes and fish cakes (if using) and keep cooking so you have a good soft rice cakes. Stir and leave to simmer until sauce is slightly thickened to your liking. Ajust seasonings accordingly. Once done, immediately add sesame oil and chopped spring onion or scallions. Serve hot with sprinkles of sesame seeds.

Feel free to add your own favourite veggies, hard boiled eggs, crab sticks, fish cakes or fish balls.
