Cooking Instructions
- 1
Fill a cooking pot with the Lentils and wash the lentils around 3-5 times or until the water runs clear.
- 2
For one cup of lentils, use 3 cups of water. For this recipe use 6 cups of water as we are using 2 cups of Lentils.
- 3
Add salt, turmeric, and chilli powder to the pot and start boiling the lentils
- 4
Remove any froth coming from the boiling lentils. This would happen in the initial phases of the boil.
- 5
Continue boiling until soft, adjust the salt and chilli powder if required.
- 6
In another pan, add oil and heat it up
- 7
Add Curry leaves, garlic, and sauté until brown. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, coriander seeds, and fenugreek seeds, dry chillies and fresh Chilli and sauté them for one minute.
- 8
Add diced onions and sauté until they are brown.
- 9
Once the onions are brown or translucent, add the tomato purée and continue to sauté for an additional 5 minutes.
- 10
Remove from the heat and add this sautéed mixture to the lentils in another pot.
- 11
Cook the lentils with the sautéed mixture for about 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
- 12
Reduce the heat to low and cook it until the proper consistency is reached.
- 13
If required, adjust the salt and chilli as per your taste.
- 14
The lentils are now ready to be served with the choice of rice, roti or can be eaten by themselves.

#colouryellow / post-1Dal tadka is a staple food and a very common item in most Indian restaurants though each has it's own version of making it and lentils vary. The most important part of this recipe is the tempering which makes a simple dal unique in it's flavour and aroma of mixed spices is simply irresistible and enjoyed with rice or any Indian flat bread.
