Ingredients

  1. 2 cupssmall white lentils (about 400 grams)
  2. 1 cupcoarse bulgur wheat (dark/cracked wheat, about 180 grams)
  3. 2.2 poundsyellow onions (about 1 kilogram)
  4. 1/2 cupvegetable oil (about 120 ml)
  5. 2 teaspoonssalt
  6. 3 cupswater (about 710 ml)

Steps

  1. 1

    Finely dice the onions into very small cubes.

  2. 2

    Place the lentils and 2 cups of water (about 475 ml) in a pot and cook over heat until the lentils are tender.

  3. 3

    Fry the onions in the oil until they turn a very dark brown.

  4. 4

    Add 1 cup of water (about 235 ml) to the fried onions, then blend them for a few minutes until you get a sauce-like mixture.

  5. 5

    Add the onion sauce and salt to the lentils. Cook over medium heat until the lentils are fully cooked.

  6. 6

    When most of the water has evaporated from the lentils, add the bulgur and stir. Let it cook until all the water is absorbed and the dish is ready.

  7. 7

    Spoon into a serving dish and garnish with fresh vegetables. Enjoy!

  8. 8

    This amount serves two people.
