Ingredients

  • 900 g (2 lbs)Lean ground beef
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup)Onion, chopped
  • 15 ml (1 Tbsp)Salt
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp)Dried parsley
  • 10 ml (2 tsp)Dried basil
  • 10 ml (2 tsp)Dried oregano
  • 5 ml (1 tsp)Fennel seed
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp)Sugar
  • 10 ml (2 tsp)Garlic powder
  • 10 ml (2 tsp)Onion powder
  • 1600 g (56 oz)Crushed tomatoes
  • 425 g (15 oz)Tomato sauce
  • 170 g (6 oz)Tomato paste
  • 30–45ml (2–3 Tbsp), reserved Pasta water

Steps

  1. 1

    In a large pot, brown the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat. Drain excess fat.

  2. 2

    Add salt, dried parsley, dried basil, dried oregano, fennel seed, sugar, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  3. 3

    Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Stir well.

  4. 4

    Simmer the sauce for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

    Just before serving, stir in 2–3 Tbsp of reserved pasta water for a silky finish.

Tips

Finish with 2-3 tablespoons of reserved pasta water for a silky texture.
