Ingredients

  1. 400 gtuna fillet (fresh or canned, drained if canned)
  2. 1lime (for marinating the fish)
  3. Salt, to taste
  4. Oil for frying
  5. Balado Sauce:
  6. 6red chilies (adjust to your spice level)
  7. 7bird’s eye chilies (optional, for extra spicy)
  8. 5Shallots
  9. 3 clovesgarlic
  10. 2-3tomatoes
  11. 1 teaspoonsugar
  12. Salt to taste
  13. 1 tsplime juice or a squeeze of lemon (optional for freshness)

Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the tuna:
    Clean the fish, sprinkle with salt and lime juice, and let it sit for 10 minutes.
    Fry until golden brown, then set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the balado sambal:
    Blend (or roughly crush) all chilies, shallots, garlic, and tomatoes.
    Sauté the mixture in oil until fragrant and slightly thickened.

  3. 3

    Combine:
    Add fried tuna to the sambal, mix gently so the fish stays intact.
    Season with salt and sugar, adjust taste as needed.

  4. 4

    Finish:
    Cook for another 3–5 minutes until everything is well coated.
    Serve warm with steamed rice 🍚

Tips

Add a few kaffir lime leaves when cooking Balado Ikan Tuna , it makes the sambal more fragrant and refreshing!
