Ingredients

30 minutes
  • 1 cupChana daal/ bengal gram lentils
    Maharashtrian Daal (फोडणीचे वरण)
  • 1/2 cupGrated fresh coconut
    Traditional Modak / Maharashtrian Talaniche Modak
  • 4Fresh green chillies chopped
  • 8Curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoonsLemon juice
  • For tempering:
  • 1 tablespoonGhee
  • 1 tspMustard seeds
  • 1 tspCumin seeds
  • 1/4 tspHing
  • 1/2 tspTurmeric powder
  • 1 tspGrated fresh ginger
  • As requiredSalt
  • 1/2 tspSugar
  • 1 tspCumin powder
  • 1 tspRed chilli powder
  • 2 cupHot water (to be added in batches.)
  • 2 cupsHot water to soak the daal

Steps

30 minutes
  1. 1

    First, wash and soak the daal in hot water for 4 hours. Drain and keep aside.

    Heat a deep based pan. Heat ghee. Then add mustard and cumin seeds. After they pop up, add hing, grated ginger, curry leaves, Chillies and turn well.

  3. 3

    Then add the daal, saute for 5 minutes. Then add half of the coconut. Then add 1/2 cup hot water and cook covered for 15 to 20 minutes on low flame. Add more water only when needed.

  4. 4

    Press ths daal with fingers. If it mashes, it's done. Else cook more. Then mix in the seasonings, Coconut and switch off the heat.

    Finally, mix in the remaining coconut and lemon juice. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Offer to Bappa and then enjoy the prasadam 🙏
