Cooking Instructions

Prep 45 min, Cook 3 hours
  1. 1

Chop Onion finely; transfer to a large mixing bowl.

  2. 2

In the mixing bowl, use your hand to combine all stuffing ingredients thoroughly kneading until the mixture is smooth as if you are going to form hamburger patties.

  3. 3

Make golf ball sized (50 to 55 g) meat balls. Set-aside.

  4. 4

Cut off the bottom of Napa cabbage and individually separate leaves gently. Wash them and roughly drain in a colander.

  5. 5

Layer the leaves on a large plate. Cover with a plastic film or a microwave food cover.

  6. 6

Cook in the microwave oven 3 to 5 min until the ridges become tender. Adjust cook time depending on your microwave oven.

  7. 7

Spread one cooked leaf from step 5 on the cutting board (or plate) and place one meat ball from step 3.

  8. 8

Wrap the meat ball slightly tighter to prevent loosen the roll during stewing.

  9. 9

Tip 1: If the ridge is too thick, pound it lightly with the back of the knife before wrapping.

  10. 10

Tip 2: If one leaf is too small, use a couple of leaves to wrap.

  11. 11

Put the cabbage rolls into the slow cooker (or large pot); arrange the cabbage rolls seam side down. Layer if necessary.

  12. 12

In a large measuring cup or a sauce pan, mix Tomato sauce and Soup stock.

  13. 13

Pour the mixture over the rolls; then add Bay leaves on top.

  14. 14

Cover with a lid, bring the stew to a boil.

  15. 15

Reduce heat to Medium temperature and cook 3 hours. Occasionally, turn the pot slowly to pour the sauce over the surface.

  16. 16

Serve and enjoy! A great party idea; you can also make these and freeze them for later use.

  17. 17

FYI: I found Napa cabbage is easier than regular green cabbage for wrapping and cooking. It also blends well with the flavour of the meat and has a delicate finish.
