Sambar can be made in wide verities with wide range of vegetables. I had a craving for sambar but had none of the sambar veggies at home, so made with cabbage and it turned out yum!! By the way what is your favourite sambar-vegetable ?

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cuppigeon pea lentil/toor daal
  2. 1 1/2 cupshredded cabbage
  3. 1tomato
  4. 1Ambula/ 2 tsp tamarind pulp
  5. As per tasteSalt
  6. poinchTurmeric
  7. 2 tspsambar powder
  8. 1/4 tsp each chana daal, urad daal, hing
  9. 1/4 tsppanch phoron (otherwise use mustard seeds + methi seeds)
  10. 2 strandscurry leaves
  11. 2whole red chilli
  12. 5/6 podscrushed garlic
  13. 2 tspchopped coriander leaves

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Soak the daal for 10/15 minutes. Chop cabbage, tomato. In a pressure cooker add daal, cabbage, tomato, Ambula and give 3 whistles. If using tamarind pulp, boil rest of the ingredients.

    Heat oil, add hing, red chilli, chana daal, urad daal, panch phoron, garlic, curry leaves. Roast for a minute and then add the boiled daal.

    Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
