A birthday cake I made for the (fictional) vocalist/keyboardist of the virtual band, Gorillaz waaaay back in 2016. Thought about sharing the recipe here. It was his (2-D's) 'supposedly' birthday yesterday and this keyboard cake, which is chocolate both inside and out was one of the best birthday cakes I've ever made for him. He's my favorite Gorillaz character and I've had this heavy crush on him ever since I first saw him and his (fictional) bandmates on TV as a 9 year old girl 19 years back!!

Due to ingredient shortages at home because of the lockdown caused by the ongoing covid-19 outbreak, fearing the virus, I couldn't run down to the store to get my usual cake supplies and bake him any new birthday cake this year. It's sad but sharing an old recipe won't hurt anybody, I suppose.

I divided the recipe and baked this cake separately in 2 square tins since I didn't have any rectangular tin with me at the time. If you have a rectangular tin, bake the full recipe in one go! If you're in a hurry, you can bake this in the microwave for 04:00 minutes like the way I did. If you're using the usual electric oven, remember to pre-heat your oven first.

রান্নার নির্দেশ

1 hr 45 mins
  1. 1

Before you start anything, melt the dark chocolate on the double boiler first, making sure that it melts evenly, stirring with the spatula constantly. Dye it with black edible color after the melted chocolate cools to room temperature. If black edible food-gel by Wilton isn't available where you live, mix equal portions of red, blue and green liquid edible dyes by Foster Clark's in a clean empty container and shake really well.

  2. 2

Cream the butter (sunflower margarine or Crisco) and sugar till they're pale and fluffy. Add 1 egg at a time or 1 tbsp of any egg replacer mixed with hot water or... mashed bananas, avocado or boiled sweet potatoes and continue to whisk till they all come together. At this point, pour the melted dark chocolate and stir with the spatula. Add the vanilla and continue to stir.

  3. 3

Sift the flour and the baking powder together. Fold those in with the spatula, add the almond/soy/coconut milk to stop it from drying up too much and give it a final stir. Grease the pan(s) with vegetable oil or clarified butter and pour the cake batter.

  4. 4

Since this was baked in the microwave, 04:00 minutes is more than enough. If you want to use the electric oven, pre-heat it beforehand and adjust your rightful temperature settings. Bake it till the toothpick or the skewer comes out clean.

  5. 5

If you've baked this in the microwave, keep the cake covered to lock the moisture. If it's baked in the usual electric oven, leave it to cool on a rack. In the mean time, start making the chocolate ganache.

  6. 6

Place another bar of dark chocolate on the double boiler but this time... pour the sterilized cream and let the chocolate melt with the cream. Continue to stir with the spatula till it melts into a velvety consistency. It'll start to thicken up with room temperature. Let the ganache cool down for a bit and then, spread it around the outside of the cake with a palette knife afterwards.

  7. 7

Create layers (1 layer at least) for the cake. Use the pastry brush to glaze the cake in and out with either soft drinks like Coke or simple syrup (2 parts sugar; 1 part water). Whip up some whipped cream mix, follow the instructions on the packet, add vanilla to it and fold the chopped nuts in and spread it around the inside of the cake. Spread the ganache on the outer portions of the cake and smoothen it out. If the cake was baked in the electric oven, leave it to chill for better results.

  8. 8

If the cake was baked in the microwave, it is advised that you leave the cake to cool in room temperature. Start making the marshmallow fondant with microwave melted marshmallows, 50-50 portions of icing sugar and corn flour. Knead it till it resembles a bread dough; you won't need that many. It's just to sculpt the buttons and keys that resemble the keyboard itself and later, paint on it. So... sculpt the buttons and keys of the "edible" keyboard and place them gently on top of the cake.

  9. 9

Paint in more details using edible food colors with a zero-point paintbrush and your keyboard cake is complete. The only thing left is to place this on a fancy cake board and impress your guests ❤

My love for food and cooking mostly came from my mum and both my sister and I grew up enjoying her dishes and were fortunate enough to inherit some of her cooking skills. I have a huuuuge sweettooth and love making desserts, whether if it's our world-famous Bengali Rasgulla or a tiny batch of dark chocolate brownies... you name it, I love ALL types of desserts!Despite tantrums and criticism from family and society, I've been a vegetarian since I turned 16 in 2008, so I refrain from eating or using anything that comes from animals and do everything I can to eat as healthy as possible.
